‘But Moses sought the favour of the LORD his God.’ Exodus 32.11

After being in God’s presence for 40 days, Moses came down the mountainside to discover that in his absence his people had started to worship an image of a golden calf. This angered God to such an extent that he planned to destroy them all. At this dramatic point, today’s verse records that Moses sought the favour of the Lord.

It was not that God had ever removed his favour from Moses or that it was now hidden, but rather that Moses needed to come back to that place of intimacy that already existed between God and himself; from there he cried out to God and God heard. In a moment of real tension and crisis, Moses needed to focus on the truth and wonder of God once again.

In the same way, when you seek the favour and intimacy of God, it is not that he has disappeared, but rather that you may have moved away and are feeling distant. God’s delight in you never changes, but your belief in it does. Come back to him every day and enjoy his favour. It may be that you want to come back to him right now and find his love afresh.
