‘ . . . I shall not be in want.’ Psalm 23.1

This is a beautiful promise that, if we think about it, is very bold: we will never be in want. The rest of the psalm goes on to explain the nature of God’s provision for us. In this verse, however, a wonderful truth is revealed, namely that we have a God who provides for us.

If we are in need, and whatever the nature of that need, we must first understand the reason why we will not lack anything. God, who has committed himself to being our living Lord in a personal way, has also committed himself to being not just a God who reigns in heaven but also a shepherd who walks by our side as we move though life; he provides for us along the way.

This is one of the most extraordinary truths about our faith: that our Lord is the same Lord who reigns in heaven and looks down on creation with all the authority of heaven, and yet at the same time he walks with us through this life, watching over us and caring for us.

Today he is watching over you and standing by you every step along the way.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
