Gazing at Jesus | 1

‘Let us fix our eyes on Jesus…’ Hebrews 12.2

One of the most exciting invitations in the New Testament is to fix our eyes on Jesus, and we will explore this in more depth over the next few days. The context seems to be that of a race, where the aim is to finish regardless of who gets there first.

The reason you should fix your eyes on Jesus is to set the direction for where you are going. The implication is that if you take your eyes off where you are heading, you may run towards the wrong thing or in the wrong direction. This is not as obvious as it seems! The Christian faith can quite easily become a different type of race – perhaps a quest for purity or a crusade against injustice. No one is against either of these, but they are not the central core of our faith. At the centre should be Jesus, and if anything else has got in the way of him, or threatens to, then you need to hear again these words from the book of Hebrews, ‘…fix your eyes on Jesus’.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
