Holding on to your vision

‘And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.’ Mark 5.25-26

Perhaps one of the most amazing things about this woman is the fact that she never gave up. We are told that she had been suffering for 12 years, had spent almost all her money on medical treatment, but was still getting worse.

Many people in her situation would take the view that this condition was something she was going to have to live with, and it was fair to expect that there would not be much change. Yet this is not how she thought. She seemed to hold onto a vision that God wanted her to be well. As soon as she heard about Jesus, she recognised another chance to receive what she believed was meant to be hers – good health.

There is a wonderful verse in John’s Gospel, in which Jesus announced that: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10.10). Does this apply to healing? Perhaps the answer to this is whether you feel that something has been robbed from you. Not everyone will take this view, but if it resonates with you then hold on to this – God takes no pleasure in your suffering. In fact, he sent Jesus to do something about it.

If you are feeling robbed of something that God has given you, whether it is your health or any other issue, recognise that it is not God who is the thief. Don’t give up but turn to the one who came to give you fullness of life. Spend time with him now and catch his heart for you as you speak these words to him: ‘You came that I may have life in all its fullness.’

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
