“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 21.4
This is such a tender picture of the love of God that we will encounter in heaven. Tears are usually wiped away gently, and this verse hints at the individual care and beautiful love of God that is focussed upon us. What’s more, this is not something reserved for the future – it is this very tenderness that Matthew recognised as part of the ministry of Jesus.
When he was writing his Gospel, at one point in chapter 12, Matthew stopped recounting the events in the life of Jesus and instead summed up Jesus’ ministry in some words he recalled from one of Isaiah’s prophecies: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out” (Matthew 12.20). This description of Jesus’ ministry foretold the gentleness and tenderness of God wiping the tears from our eyes.
Knowing that Jesus is like this is what opens the door for us to come to him and be willing to share our deepest hurts and most personal thoughts with him. These are the very things he wants us to bring to him, in the knowledge that he will meet us with the tenderness that he showed in his ministry on earth and which permeates the life to come. Why not turn to him now?
