‘And Abraham said to God, ‘If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!”’ Genesis 17.18
Abraham uttered these words in response to God’s extraordinary promise that he and Sarah would have a child, and that through this child a great nation would be born. Given their advancing years and the fact that Sarah had been unable to conceive in the past, Abraham was naturally challenged by the promise. He wonders if a simpler solution might be for God to carry out his promise in a different way – through someone else, such as Ishmael – but God is determined to do it his way.
We are all children of promise. God has promised us that his presence and his intervention will go with us through life. We just have a hard time believing it! We often assume that God will take easy options, such as use someone else, when in reality he wants to use us.
God’s commitment to us personally is perhaps one of the hardest things for us to grasp. He loves the whole world, but he also loves you individually. He has many people he could use to bring about his purposes, but he wants to use you specifically. He has a grand plan for the whole world, and he has a plan for you personally.
You are unique, individually gifted, and personally called to be a means through whom God desires to bless others. You matter to God, and you make a difference to his world.
