“And lead us not into temptation” Matthew 6.13
We are all aware of the main things in life which are constant temptations to us; the areas in which we battle. This remarkable phrase invites us to be utterly honest with ourselves and with the God who loves us about who we are and our weaknesses.
This prayer invites us to acknowledge the truth that it is not God who takes us into these places of temptation, but that we are drawn there either by ourselves or by other forces at work. Yet despite this, these are still areas about which the Father longs for our honesty.
Dare you trust that his love for you is so great that he will not cast you out if you disclose to him the areas in your life which cause you most struggle? Deep down, you may well be thinking God will be so shocked by what you reveal that he will run away in complete surprise at what you are like. We all need to remember he probably knows what we are really like already!
The extent of your friendship and fellowship with God is determined by whether you can share your weaknesses with him in the trust that he will not punish you, but instead will actually love you even more (if that is possible) because of the honesty and closeness you are revealing. What do you want to bring to him right now?
