What is God’s love like? | 4

‘… Jesus Christ, … who loves us…’ Revelation 1.5

Our focus over the past few days has been some glorious aspects of Jesus: Jesus, the perfect revelation of God; Jesus risen from the dead; and Jesus, ruler over all things. Some of these images are easy to hold in our mind, often thanks to paintings and works of art that reveal different aspects of Jesus. However, the description of Jesus we come across today is beyond depiction: the fact that he loves us.

What is love? Perhaps one of the most powerful descriptions contained in the Bible is Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 13. These words can be so challenging as we face up to how far we fall short of them. However, another way of reading this passage is to see in the words a description of God’s standard of love – a love that must be a description of himself.

Spend a moment reading 1 Corinthians 13.4–7. Take each phrase and word slowly and thoughtfully, not analysing whether or not you match up to the words, but rather seeking to catch the nature and truth of what it means for God to love you in this way.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
