‘Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, in keeping with the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus’ 2 Timothy 1.1 The phrase, ‘in keeping with the promise of life’, sums up the good news of our Christian faith – it is all about a promise of life. You might be tempted to think of your life as the hand that you get dealt, but when Jesus spoke about it he used two other words that help our understanding. One word is ‘eternal’ life. This is not just about when we die but is about our relationship with God now. In John 17.3, Jesus said: “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” So, it follows that by opening our hearts to God and seeking to know him, we are beginning to enter into this eternal life. Another word Jesus used to describe life is ‘fullness’. We find this in John 10.10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” This is at the heart of healing. Jesus had just healed a blind man, and I can imagine the two of them standing together as Jesus swept his hand over the crowds, declaring that he came to bring life in its fullness. This is his promise for us. Of course, we cannot guarantee what he is going to heal, but his promise is for our transformation, whether in a part of our life that we feel needs transforming or in a different area entirely. It is still the promise of life. As you come to Jesus today, you are meeting with the living Jesus and the promise of life in him. Come with the certainty that he wants to bring life to you.
