‘Father, glorify your name!’ John 12.28
These words of Jesus spoken to his Father are possibly some of the most appropriate words we could have on our lips as we begin this New Year. At this point in John’s Gospel, so much has happened in Jesus’ ministry and he now faces the brutality of the cross and the glory of the resurrection. His prayer is one of total surrender to his Father, and a cry that other people’s knowledge of the Father might be increased through him. Jesus is praying that the loving character of God, his Father and our Father, might be seen more and more clearly.
We simply have no idea what this year brings for us, yet what we can pray is that as we begin to step into all that it holds for us, God will glorify his name. Our prayer can be that the loving character of God the Father will be seen more and more, both by us and through us.
Whatever resolutions you have made, or dreams you have for these next twelve months, if you are able to say at the end of the year that you know more of the Father’s loving heart – and that others know more of it because of you – it will have been a good year.
