‘For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendour and glory of his majesty.’ Esther 1.4
Over the next three days we will be looking at the book of Esther which reveals a big contrast between King Xerxes and God. As the book begins, Xerxes is showing off his kingdom by organising a truly sumptuous affair, with food and wine flowing and seemingly no expense spared.
This description is in marked contrast to the way God showed off his kingdom. God did not reveal his kingdom through riches and glory, but through a man who, in the eyes of the world, was poor and possessed very little. Jesus showed the glory of God, not simply by pointing to God’s riches and power, but also by revealing the effect of this power upon us – a power to heal, forgive and restore.
Jesus also revealed just how wonderful we are; so valuable to God that he sent Jesus for us. Far too often we are made to think badly of ourselves, whereas the reality is that we are of immeasurable value to God.
The good news is that when we see the kingdom of God revealed in Jesus, it is God’s power released to those he loves. Take a moment now to see yourself before the one who loves you so much that he gave Jesus for you. How does this make you feel and what will you do about it?
