Alive to God

‘In the same way, count yourselves … alive to God’ Romans 6.11 

Over the past few days we have been looking at the calling to see ourselves differently, and in particular to recognise that we are ‘dead to sin’.  Paul goes on to develop this point by highlighting another way in which we are called to see ourselves – ‘alive to God’.

If you are honest, there may be many occasions when you don’t think of yourself like this because you don’t feel particularly alive to God, and your thoughts may not turn to him very often throughout the day. If this is how you feel, then your assumption is that your feelings are reflecting the truth.  However, whether or not God feels particularly alive to you from one moment to the next is not the issue; the stunning truth is that you are certainly alive to him!

Whatever you may feel, the Bible reveals that God loved you so much that he gave the life of Jesus in exchange for you.  It also reveals that he has made his home within you, and that he has promised to bring to completion the work within you that he has started.  You are always on his heart and in his mind, and whether or not you forget about him, he will never forget about you.  The command is to build your life upon a foundation of these glorious truths, and to enjoy the security they provide.
