Approaching God

‘In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.’ Ephesians 3.12

There really is not much more to be added to this simple and beautiful verse.  We have permission to approach God at all times, no matter where we are, what we have done and whether or not we think we ought to approach him.  Every one of us has the right to come to him who, according to the letter to the Hebrews, is sitting on a throne from where ‘we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.’ (4.16)

What an enormous privilege, and yet so often we don’t take this simple step.  Instead we worry, fret and let anxiety creep over us, whilst Almighty God still sits on his throne and calls our name for us to turn to him.

It helps to remember the beginning of the verse; namely that we are ‘in him’ – closer to him than we could ever imagine.  It also helps to remember that his throne is present for us personally – he is there for us.

At the beginning of this daily thought I said that there was not much we could add to this beautiful phrase, but perhaps there is!  We can add our determination to take a step towards him in our moments of need.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
