Approaching Jesus

‘When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak’ Mark 5.27

The account of the woman who touched the cloak of Jesus is a powerful story about healing, and over the next few days we are going to ponder some of the truths within it.

A searching question about all the healing stories of Jesus is this: who were the people he touched? Whatever it is about them, we want to be the same! Interestingly, to think like this is to miss something wonderful.

The woman’s action in this story was utterly unique. We know she was in need and somehow had heard about Jesus, so because of this she crept up behind him to touch his cloak. We have no idea why she did this! It is unlikely she was copying others since we do not read of any suggestions that this was the correct way to approach Jesus. She simply followed her instinct by applying what she had heard about him to her own situation. She seemed to have a sense that Jesus was present, she was in need, and so of course he would want to touch her.

As you come before him with your needs, begin by bearing in mind that it is Jesus that you are approaching. He is the same Jesus who demonstrated repeatedly God’s desire to heal, and who spoke so tenderly to the woman who touched his cloak. This is the one to whom you come with your needs. Sit with him now and talk to him as honestly as you can.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
