Are you called?

‘Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”’ Isaiah 6.8

What does it mean to have a calling? The idea can summon up dramatic images of God pointing his finger at someone, deliberately and specifically choosing them for a particular purpose.

The call of Isaiah was of a different nature and is actually far more challenging for us. Isaiah had a vision of God simply asking a question, “Whom shall I send?” Isaiah responded by volunteering to be the answer to God’s question.

Admittedly, you may not have such a dramatic vision of heaven as Isaiah, but your Bible is full of visions of God enthroned on high. His throne is not an abstract throne set among the fluffy clouds of heaven but is set amidst the reality of this world. Next time you are gripped by a human need, perhaps God is also saying to you, “Whom shall I send?”

You obviously cannot do everything, but you may be able to do something. Begin by identifying what concerns you or what situation really bothers you. Then consider whether there is anything practical you can do. If there is, think about doing it – but if not, take up the cause in prayer.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
