Asking for Healing

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” John 14.13-14

Asking is a key aspect of this verse.  If we think about these words of Jesus in the context of healing, it is true that there is a mystery about this that seems to leave some people asking without receiving.  However, it is equally true that there are many, many people who testify to the hand of God moving in direct answer to their prayers.  The problem for many is that they have stopped asking.

For some, the wait has simply been too long.  They reason that if God has not answered up to now, then why should he in the future?  Yet the Kingdom of God continues to grow.  Isaiah 9.7 says, ‘Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end.’ We can ask afresh because there is more of God’s kingdom today than yesterday, and also because in our relationship with him we are surrendering more of ourselves to him day by day.

For others, they do not ask precisely because they are frightened that God will not give them what they want.  It is easier not to ask than to be refused or disappointed.  However, part of our intimacy with God is to bring him every part of our lives – and that includes our hurts and pains.  Intimacy can only happen when pains, as well as loving thoughts, are shared.  Perhaps our ability to ask God to meet our needs is an indicator of our intimacy with him? By not asking, the door remains firmly closed.

Whatever your needs today, Jesus stands before you and bids you come to him and ask.  Why not seize this opportunity to focus on his presence with you and dare to ask him for what you want?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
