Banish the sharks! | 3

‘But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.’ James 1.6

What is it that we must believe in and not doubt? Is this one of those verses that is asking us to believe we have something that we plainly do not have?

Perhaps one of the main things we are asked to hold on to is linked to the previous verse, which we looked at yesterday – that God is generous and does not find fault in us.

It is a common experience for many of us to dip our toes into the waters of God’s love only to see ‘sharks’ swimming around, so we hastily jump back onto dry land. These sharks are the voices of the one the Bible calls ‘the thief’, who loves to plunder the things of God (John 10.10). The voice of the thief comes in the form of accusation: “How can these things apply to you with all that you have done wrong?” “How could he love you that much? No one else does.” The question is, whose voice will we listen to – to the whisper of God who is generous and does not find fault, or to the sneers of the one who would seek to rob us of all that God has for us?

As you sit before God now, recognise the efforts of the thief to distract you, and fix your attention instead upon Almighty God, who loves you and is calling you to a new life with him.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
