‘In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias.’ Acts 9.10
We have no idea what Ananias was planning to do that day, but what he ended up doing was probably beyond his wildest dreams. He went to pray for a man who had been the greatest threat to the church. What’s more, this man (Saul) was healed of blindness as Ananias prayed. Not a bad day by anyone’s reckoning!
You probably have some sense of what your day holds for you. The challenge we all face is to spend our days with an awareness of God’s presence in our lives, his rule over everything and an openness to his ‘nudge’ which is his call for us to respond to him. We may feel that his ‘nudge’ is only small and is not likely to achieve much, but if God whispers for us to do it, then it is significant in his eyes.
The key to this approach is to be continually open to God. One of the best ways to do this is to develop the practice of speaking the name ‘Jesus’ whenever you find yourself in ‘idle’ mode, whether it be walking, driving, waiting or sitting down. His name on your lips becomes a prayer of readiness, turning your attention to him to hear whatever he wants to say to you.
Practise this now by spending time silently speaking Jesus’ name, and let it turn your attention to him.
