Be salty

“You are the salt of the earth.” Matthew 5.13

This is one of the most familiar sayings of Jesus but what does it really mean and how can it become relevant for us? The Living Bible translates it as this, “You are the world’s seasoning, to make it tolerable.” The implication is that every one of us can make a difference to the people around us.

So what can you do? What small acts of kindness from you will touch someone’s life? What few words can you say to someone in need of encouragement, whether they are serving you in a shop, delivering your mail or sweeping your street? What can you bring to let them know they are recognised for who they are and not just for what they do?

Such acts might cost you nothing more than a few moments of your time, but to those who receive them they might be the salt that is needed to change them and brighten their day.

Another chance to listen to John’s one minute thought on being salty . . .

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
