‘“Show me a denarius. Whose portrait and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied. He said to them, “Then give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”’ Luke 20.24-25
Jesus faced opposition during his ministry. The context for this verse was when some of his opponents tried to set a trap for him. In a devastating display of wisdom, Jesus dumbfounded his critics and his words still say something profound to us today.
His teaching was based on the belief that if something bore the owner’s mark, it should not be stolen or defaced because it belonged to that person. We all bear the mark of God: we are created in his image and we bear his name. We do not belong to ourselves, we belong to him. The wonderful thing about this is that we have a worth that has been set by him and not by us.
You may see yourself as small in comparison to others, but God has set a value on you which you have no right to challenge or deface. He values you so much that in his eyes you were worth the death of Jesus. Hold in your mind the image of Christ on the cross – in God’s opinion, you were worth this.
