Bearing the qualities of Jesus

‘The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him – the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord’ Isaiah 11.2

When Isaiah received his vision of the coming Messiah, he had this amazing sense of the Lord alive with everything that the Spirit brought to him. All we have to do is look at the ministry of Jesus to see that Isaiah was absolutely right; all these qualities and more were exhibited in Jesus as he brought his message to earth.

This is the same Jesus who invites us to come to him. He bears these qualities for us, the people he loves and for whom he came, and he has more than enough wisdom, understanding, counsel and might for our lives. When we turn to Jesus, we come to the one who is still alive with these qualities.

We can take this further still. If the presence of Jesus dwells within us, this is not some pared down poor reflection of him. Instead, we bear all the fullness of Jesus – including all these wonderful qualities. Yet it is amazingly easy for us to overlook them!

If there is something you need help with at the moment, pause to remind yourself what is available to you through Jesus.  If you are confused about what to say, for example, remember that you bear the ‘Spirit of wisdom’, or if you are feeling weak, remind yourself that you have the ‘Spirit of might’.  In this way, let the things of Jesus soak into you.
