Before you pray

‘But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.’ Matthew 6.6

Sometimes it can be really hard to pray for our own healing.  One reason is because our symptoms tend to dominate everything else, drowning out the hope and promise of healing that we find in the person of Jesus.  This verse gives us wonderful, practical wisdom about how to begin our prayers – whether for healing or anything else.

Jesus spoke about what to do before we pray – but often we jump straight into our prayers without following his advice.  He suggested three things that we will look at over the next few days.

Today, before you pray, whether it be your time of daily prayer or a quick ‘arrow’ prayer that you offer up in response to something that happens, take a moment to pause and reflect on what you are about to do.  You are about to talk to the creator of heaven and earth, who is also your Father who loves you with a tender love.  Your prayers are not just words coming out of your lips but are your call to the one who loves you.
