Behaving Outrageously

Some men came, bringing to him a paralysed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. Mark 2.3-4

This really is quite an outrageous story! Four men want their friend to be healed by Jesus and because they cannot get him into the room, they go up on the roof and dig it out! There must have been other options – one of the four friends could have gone into the room and begged Jesus to come out, or they could all have waited outside for Jesus to finish his teaching, and then bring their request to him.

The truth is that the four friends probably didn’t think much about the options; they knew what they wanted and they were going to get it, no matter what. At the heart of their outrageous action was the conviction that they had to get their friend to Jesus who would surely want to help him; they believed, and nothing was going to get in the way of what they believed. It raises the question of what it is that we actually believe about the will of God for us, and his kindness to us.

You, like many others, may have quite a casual belief in God’s loving heart for you. If you are honest, do you suspect that he might only think of you from time to time if you do really well or make a special effort to pray for longer? The truth couldn’t be more different: you are always on God’s mind and he loves you so much that he gave Jesus for you.

If you really believe this, what outrageous prayers can you pray and what outrageous things can you believe about yourself?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
