Being a Temple

‘…the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.’ 2 Chronicles 5.14

The Ark of the Covenant (the holy box that contained the tablets of stone given to Moses) was taken into the temple, and the events that followed create a stunning image: people were so caught up in worship they could hardly stand, a cloud appeared and God’s glory filled the temple. Hardly an everyday occurrence! It is so easy to read this account and feel very little personal connection to it, whereas the truth is that we are very much a part of those events, way more than we might ever consider.

A theme that I frequently refer to is the revelation that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We often use this phrase as a warning not to sin or to keep ourselves holy, and rightly so. However, unless we catch the wonder of what a temple is, our Christian lives can become a set of rules, ‘oughts’ and ‘thou shalt nots’. Rather than focus on such thinking, begin to glimpse the wonder of who you are – a physical place carefully and imaginatively created by God to contain his very presence.

You may be all too aware of your every failing, but when God looks at you this is not what catches his attention. Instead, he sees his presence dwelling in you – his temple.

Pause for a few moments to ponder the fact that the presence of God dwells in you. He made you for this particular purpose and he loves what he has made.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
