‘You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.’ Psalm 23.5
One of the great truths we can so easily forget is that we are marked with the presence of the Holy Spirit. We have been touched by him and so we are living temples that house the presence of God.
This is a beautiful truth with which to begin a time of prayer. It brings us back to the wonder of the relationship we have with God, but it is also a powerful truth to focus on in times of difficulty.
Wherever we go – whether we walk in times of peace and have an awareness of God’s presence, or walk in gloom and confusion – we carry that anointing, that touch that will not be lifted from us. The one does not negate the other, but they exist together. We carry God’s presence and anointing into the times of difficulty we face, and because of that we have a resource that is greater than anything else.
What brings us comfort and joy is to know that awareness of his presence. It is for this reason that it is so helpful to spend some time every day recalling Jesus’ presence with us, either by spending a few minutes saying the name ‘Jesus’, or by recalling the beautiful verse, ‘I bear your name, Lord God Almighty’ (Jeremiah 15.16). Recalling these words in times of quiet arms us with the truth, which we can then take into times of turmoil.
