Being anxious

‘…he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.’ Mark 14.33

It is often implied that to be anxious or troubled is a failing or sin, yet such thinking can make us even more anxious – before we were simply anxious, but now we are anxious and sinning! Today’s verse is how Jesus is described in the Garden of Gethsemane, someone who was deeply anxious and troubled – yet I don’t think we would call him a sinner!

It is natural that he would be troubled because of the events facing him, yet presumably he also knew something of the glory that was going to come after the darkness. Despite this, he still succumbed to feelings of deep distress and trouble. It may be that he willingly submitted to these feelings in order that in every age to come he would be able to stand before each person who succumbed to anxiety, look them in the eye and say, “I know”.

Leaving aside any question of whether or not we should feel anxious, Jesus stands with every one of us in our times of anxiety and says to us with absolute conviction, “I know what you are going through.”

As you come before your Saviour God today, bring your anxieties to him but recognise that you are bringing them to one who knows how you are feeling and is perfectly in control of what is to come.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
