‘He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters . . .’ Psalm 23.2
Green pastures and quiet waters are external images of something internal to which we probably all aspire: peace. The words in this verse speak of a tranquillity for which our often hurt and broken lives long. But there are two interesting points about this tranquillity.
The first is that peace and tranquillity are directly linked to following the shepherd. They are not feelings that come upon us as we pursue our own means of finding them; they come as we follow the one whom the Bible calls ‘The Prince of Peace’. The peace that is promised to us is real and very beautiful, but it is not of our own making. It comes from God.
The second point to note is that if this peace comes through following the shepherd, we need to recognise the importance of following him, because we probably would not find the path ourselves. In other words, the path to peace along which the shepherd chooses to take us may not be a path we would ordinarily choose to take. It may involve what we see as hardship and seeming danger and insecurity. Yet if we are seeking to follow the shepherd, the destination will be beautiful and we will always have someone with us to help us.
Peace is something we all desire and it is good to express this desire to God, but as you do so place this day in his hands, trust him with it and let him lead you to the peaceful path.
