‘… so he was named Jacob.’ Genesis 25.26
The story of Jacob is fascinating. Here was a man chosen and blessed by God to be a central figure in the establishment of God’s people, yet all his life he was tricked and cheated and in turn he tricked and cheated others. The footnote in the Bible translates his name as ‘he deceives’, so he certainly lived up to his name!
He treated his brother with contempt, allowed himself to be swayed by his mother in deceiving his father and always struggled to believe God was with him, so he constantly sought to make blessings become a reality by his own efforts. He really was not the sort of person you would think of as a candidate for blessing and anointing. So why would God use someone like him?
The simple fact is that God chose Jacob regardless of whether or not he would live up to his calling. It was not Jacob’s goodness that brought about anything, but the hand of God.
The lesson for us in all of this is that we too are chosen. Ephesians 1.4 speaks of us being chosen before the foundation of the world so, like Jacob, we have not been chosen because of our goodness or saintly behaviour – God has simply chosen us. What you do with this fact is up to you, but first, rejoice in it! You do not have to battle to get God to choose you as he has already done that, so relax and see what he can do through you. Bear these words in mind: ‘I am chosen.’
