‘The LORD has rewarded me according to . . . my cleanness in his sight.’ 2 Samuel 22.25
If you think about it, David expressing his cleanness in God’s sight is quite amazing since he had actually committed a number of sins in a short space of time – adultery, deception and murder. Even though God had revealed his knowledge of David’s sin through the prophet Nathan, David was confident that he was clean in the sight of God. What does this say to us?
Many people don’t need their sin revealing to them as they live under a crushing sense of guilt for their past mistakes. Deep down they imagine that when God looks at them it is likely to be with disappointment or even repulsion. David may well have been a great sinner, but he was also a great receiver of God’s mercy. He had a remarkable ability to believe in the grace offered by God and to take seriously his forgiveness.
You may or may not see yourself as a great sinner, but what matters more is whether you can be a great receiver of God’s mercy. Are you able to echo the words of David and say with confidence that you are clean in the sight of God?
