‘In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.’ Ephesians 1.5-6
To be adopted as a child of Father God is a marvellous reality to grasp. This is not something that is only true for certain selected people but is a reality for every Christian and we all need to recognise it. These two verses say some wonderful things about adoption, which we will look at over the next few days.
The first truth is that adoption is in accordance with God’s will – it is what he wants. We sometimes puzzle about what God’s will for us might be, but here it is laid out very clearly. He wants us to know that he has adopted us. His desire is that every person should be absolutely certain of this as a reality. Our heavenly Father does not have favourite children to whom he gives deeper experiences of his love, and others who are less important. His will, revealed in the Bible, is that every one of us should know the astounding truth that we are chosen to be his beloved child.
Take a few minutes to let this truth sink in and really have an impact upon you. You may like to repeat these words to yourself, “I am adopted by God and I am his precious child.”
