Being led in tenderness

‘This is what the Lord says – your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go.”’ Isaiah 48.17

There is something very powerful about these words as they set the context for the way in which God speaks to us.

The notion of God teaching and directing us comes as no real surprise. After all, we are quite accustomed to the idea of God directing us – we’re just not sure we like the idea too much! The thought of someone telling us what to do sounds too controlling. There might also be a sense of God as a bit of a spoilsport, wagging his finger and saying “No” in a stern manner whenever we are having fun.

The most wonderful aspect of this verse is the way it is introduced. God speaks and directs not as a stern headmaster, but rather as our redeemer. He is the one who wants to take our lives and make something wonderful out of them, the one who came to save us and lift us out of the pits in which we find ourselves, and the one whose love for us drove him to give his very self to us.

This is the one who teaches and direct us – the one who wants us to experience life in all its fullness.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
