“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields – along with persecutions – and in the age to come eternal life. Mark 10.29-30
Jesus said that suffering for our faith would occur. This can happen in a variety of ways: outright hostility, misunderstanding, snide jokes, temptations or a struggle to turn away from something we know does not bless the Lord. Whatever form our suffering takes, this verse reassures us that God sees it. What’s more, every time we take a stand for him something good is stored up for us. The way Jesus puts it is in terms of reward; that what we give up, we get back.
This is an amazing concept. Every time we choose not to bite back at something someone says, or choose to forgive, we might feel very little but the truth is that something wonderful is put into us, so that the kingdom of God grows within and around us.
You may sometimes be tempted to think of God watching your every move, just waiting for you to trip up and do wrong. Instead, the reality is that he is watching you, looking at every good thing that flows from you, and rejoicing over you. Remember this as you go about your day.
