Being served by Jesus

‘For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’  Mark 10.45

How do you understand the phrase that Jesus came to serve? It might bring to mind something like the image of Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. However, it goes deeper than this.

Jesus’ service spans the whole of his ministry among us. The very next story after these words from Mark were spoken, is about Jesus restoring the sight of blind Bartimaeus – this was Jesus’ service to him. We often think that the point of Jesus’ ministry is either to reveal his divinity or to offer acts of love to broken people, yet it is also about his acts of service to us.

It might seem hard to ask Jesus to serve you by meeting your needs, but you can be encouraged that graceful service is what he came to do. You may not deserve his kindness or service, but you can still stand before him with your arms open wide in gratitude for who he is, and in the expectation that his mission has not changed.

As you come to Jesus today, what will you bring to him? How will you let him serve you and how does this feel?
