Being thankful

‘He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him’ Luke 17.16

The story of the ten lepers is well known. All of them received healing from Jesus but only one of them came back to give thanks. It is interesting that all ten were physically healed but to the one who came back Jesus said, “…your faith has made you well.” It seems that they all received something, but the one who returned got even more – perhaps a relationship with Jesus as well as being physically healed.

We are not always very good at giving thanks to God. We are quick enough to call to him when we are in need, but slow to give thanks when we receive his help. It is not that God needs our thanks or keeps a tally of those who do or don’t write thank you letters, but perhaps he enjoys our thanksgiving because he knows that it blesses us. He gave everything possible to establish a relationship with us and perhaps giving thanks is one way of entering into it a little more.

Call to mind one of God’s particular blessings to you and as you consider what this gift means to you, let your thoughts turn to thanksgiving and in this way deepen your relationship with him.

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
