‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.’ Jeremiah 1.5
I wonder what Jeremiah thought when he heard God speaking these words to him. It must have startled him. Presumably he assumed he was going about his own business like everyone else. If he did think about God, it was probably more to do with trying to please him and not to sin too much – and then God reveals this stunning truth that actually he has been intimately involved in Jeremiah’s whole being since before the womb! Even back then, Jeremiah had been chosen and appointed by God. How amazing Jeremiah would have felt.
All that is true of Jeremiah is true of us. Just as Jeremiah was known to God before his physical life took shape, so were we; just as he was appointed to his calling, so are we.
Psalm 139.13 speaks about us being knit together in our mothers’ wombs. Ephesians 1.4 speaks about us being chosen before the foundation of the world. What changed Jeremiah is when he heard God speak it to him personally. Why not let the Spirit do that for you?
Sit in the quiet for a few minutes and let the Father speak these words to you: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” Repeat them slowly to yourself and catch the wonder of what you mean to God.
