Bring a smile to God’s face

“She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Mark 14.6

Jesus was talking here about Mary anointing him. Others looked on and grumbled about the extravagance of what she was doing, but Jesus loved it! Mary wasn’t acting out of obedience or doing something she had been told to do – she just wanted to do this for Jesus. She wanted to give something from her heart and her action moved him.

This is not an image of an austere Jesus who is only satisfied when people follow him with slavish obedience. Instead, this is a Jesus who can be surprised, touched and moved. We, too, can bring a smile to his face.

So for you, perhaps the obvious question is this: what can you do today to bring a smile to Jesus’ face? What can you do that will bring him pleasure? It may be an act of kindness, a bold move to extend the kingdom of God or a spontaneous act of worship. Do it and bring him joy.
