“I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.” John 11.27
It is so easy to read the Bible from the perspective of knowing how the story will work out in the end. One way of growing our faith is to see our own lives reflected in the Gospel stories and, knowing what we know about Jesus, trying to respond in the way we feel the people in the Gospel stories should have reacted.
The story of Lazarus is a good example. We know how it ends and are willing Martha and Mary to have faith that Jesus is going to do something wonderful. However, in our own lives we are not necessarily so good at having the faith we want to so easily encourage in others.
Today’s Bible passage provides us with Martha’s words as she made tentative steps towards believing that Jesus was about to do something wonderful. They are words we would all do well to take to heart. As you face situations in which you know you ought to have faith but don’t, try to let her words be your words. Repeat them until you find your faith rising in the light of the truth that Jesus is with you and his presence can change things: “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”
