“… everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.” Isaiah 43.7
Isaiah uses three phrases to describe us in this verse. These phrases are God’s view of us, how he sees us. What’s interesting is that his opinion can be so very different from our own.
The first phrase is that you are ‘called by his name’. God is not ashamed, embarrassed or apologetic to have his name stamped upon you; instead he is proud to be associated with you.
Jesus prayed that the love the Father had for him would be in you (John 17.26). If this is the extent of the Father’s love for you, no wonder he takes pride and joy in you. He sees you through the same proud and loving eyes with which he sees Jesus.
Of course, this can cause a problem because you think you know what you are really like; you know why God should not love you. However, that is exactly the point of this particular phrase – you are called by his name. It is not your decision to be loved by him, and he doesn’t even ask you about it; it is his choice, his decision and his calling, and there is nothing you can do about it.
Learning to accept and rest in the love of God is hard, not because of anything you have to do to find it but because it means turning your back on your own self-image and accepting his deep love for you. Take a moment to ponder your image of yourself and consider these words: ‘I am called by his name.’
