‘Then the temple of the Lord was filled with a cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God.’ 2 Chronicles 5.13-14
The picture these words convey is quite dramatic. At the service of consecration, the priests (who no doubt had their own expectations of what was meant to happen in the service) were utterly bowled over by the sense of God’s presence to such an extent that they were unable to do what they expected to do. I imagine that for a long time afterwards they took their duties even more seriously, knowing that God was in their midst.
We don’t have clouds floating around us to remind us of his presence, but we have something equally powerful. Paul writes about us in these words: ‘The Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you.’ We have within us something similar to the presence of God that dwelt in that temple. While the priests could feel and see his presence, we have to take it by faith – but it is still as real.
Whatever you face today, go into each situation aware that the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you.
