‘While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”’ Luke 24.36
There is something wonderful about the fact that when the risen Jesus met with his disciples, his first words were a desire for them to be at peace. In the light of all that had happened there would have been many things Jesus could have said, but he chose to extend peace to them. These words may have been a common form of greeting, but as we read about the way he dealt with their joy and enthusiasm, it is clear he was delighted to be with them.
What a difference it would make to us if we actually believe that when we turn to God afresh every day in prayer, his first words to us are, “Peace be with you.” You may come to him with anxieties, despair or maybe a troubled conscience, but before you speak about these things, try to catch his words to you – “Peace be with you.” Though he sees exactly what is on your heart, his first desire is that you know his peace.
