“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” Jeremiah 2.13
The sadness that God seeks to convey through this verse in Jeremiah is that God’s people have taken their eyes off him and started to seek other things to meet their needs instead of turning to him.
Let’s take a moment to see the incredibly good news in this statement: God is saying that he can be everything to us. If we are honest, we would probably say that we are all too aware of using other people, or even things, to support and comfort us. There isn’t anything wrong in this as God gave us each other for our mutual support, and creation is to be enjoyed. However, we get it the wrong way round when we turn to other people or things before we turn to God. He will comfort us through other people, but if we seek their comfort before we turn to him, we run the risk of being described as those people who dig their own cisterns.
God delights in his children bringing their needs to him and he is well aware of the love and comfort that we need. He is not asking us to forego such comfort but is longing for us to turn to him more and more with our needs. In this way we will see more clearly our dependence on him and his joy in our presence.
