‘. . . he restores my soul.’ Psalm 23.3
There is a saying that time is a great healer. It may take away the immediacy of our pain, but it rarely removes it altogether. Our healer and our restorer is not time, but Jesus, who loves us and gave himself for us. This healing and restoring begins by us knowing our need of him. So many times we read in the Gospels that the people who were healed by Jesus were those who actually came to him, the ones who stepped out of the crowd and fell at his feet.
The pain we bear is real. It may be the memory of people we have lost, the pain of rejection or loss or of missed opportunities or seemingly wasted years.
This psalm states that there is the hope of restoration, and that hope comes from Jesus. The same Jesus who healed the sick and forgave sinners is the one who promises to restore us. This restoration does not come with the passing of time, but by encountering Jesus and letting something of his healing touch reach out to us.
Whatever your pains, make a conscious decision not to bury them away deep inside, but to own up to them with honesty and bring them to Jesus, who promises to restore you. Take a step to begin to do this right now.
