‘Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.’ Psalm 139.23
In this psalm, David shares such lovely revelations about God’s presence and delight in him, and yet at the very end he reveals his vulnerability by admitting to anxious thoughts. Something about this warms us to David, for at times don’t we all struggle with anxiety?
What we do about them is where we might differ from David, who admitted his anxiety to God precisely because he knew the depth of God’s love for him. He knew the tenderness with which God cared for him, and in that context he could stand and invite the God he loved to search him and know his anxieties.
David opened up his heart to God because he knew that whatever God found would be treated with love and gentleness, yet most of us probably don’t care to admit our anxieties, even though we may be eaten up with worry.
Standing before Jesus, who perfectly revealed the love and heart of Father God, may seem brave, but it is also an incredible act of love. Come before him just as you are and say to him something along the lines of, “I stand before you and know that nothing will stop the flow of your love, so here I am with all my anxieties and fears.“
