‘. . . I will fear no evil, for you are with me’ Psalm 23.4
Fear can be a natural response to a situation over which we feel we have no control. It may be entirely rational or completely irrational. To simply tell someone not to fear is not really very helpful. Fear is removed when it is replaced by something else – in this case, the confidence that someone greater than what we fear is present.
The potential for fear in this psalm is very great. David has just spoken about walking through a valley of the shadow of death, yet he will not fear because he is certain that the shepherd is with him.
Our particular fears might be very real, but so is Jesus. Our problems occur when we let the presence of our fears dislodge the presence of Jesus, and then do nothing about it. Practise finding Jesus in the times of peace, and then in times of fear you will be able to call upon the greatest resource you have.
If this is a time of fear or confusion, find Jesus now. Remind yourself of God’s amazing, perfect love, a love so great that he sent Jesus for you. Now ask yourself where Jesus is for you and seek his presence. Let his presence be a greater presence than the situation or person that you fear.
