‘For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.’ Psalm 40.12
At times it may be that you feel just like this! It’s not just that something is wrong with your life, but that there seem to be so many things piling up against you. These probably tend to dominate your vision so that you can’t really see past them and they make it difficult to find God.
A little later on in this psalm, David wrote: ‘May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.’ The significance of this is that the same person who spoke about all his troubles also spoke about the reality of seeking God and being glad. In other words – whatever is going on, God is present. It may well be hard to find him, but he is there.
You might find it helpful to remind yourself that no matter what difficulties are crowding against you, God is enthroned on high, far above them all. He is not ‘dethroned’ by them but is longing for you to look up – as David did in the psalm – and despite everything that you might be going through to say along with David, ‘The Lord is great!’ (verse 16)
