Do you have to understand it all?

So they asked him, ‘Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?’ The man who was healed had no idea who it was. – John 5.12-13
I think many of us wish we understood more about Jesus! We would love to know more about who he was and what he came to do. The fascinating point in this story is just how little this man seemed to know about Jesus. In fact, he was unable to give any coherent answer when questioned about who had healed him!
This is so encouraging for us, because no matter how little we might think we know about Jesus, his mission, the doctrine of the Trinity, how Jesus relates to the work of the Holy Spirit – or anything else on our list of things we do not fully understand about God! – none of this stops God working in our lives.
As we read the New Testament, the revelation of Jesus that we are given provides us with a picture of who Jesus is and increases our sense of expectation. This feeds us as we look for his touch in our own lives, but the point is this: what we receive from him does not necessarily depend upon our ability to grasp the truths of our faith. Reading the Bible and thinking about it is important, but our lack of understanding is not a closed door for God.
When we approach God, he wants us to be honest and natural with him, not pretending we are any better or different than we really are. This is how he loves us to be with him.
