‘Anyone, then who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.’ James 4.17
We may think we have a pretty good idea of what makes something a sin and could come up with a list of actions we would be able to identify by that word. However, this verse from James presents a whole new challenge regarding the concept of sin. It is not just about the bad things we do, but also the good things we don’t do.
Fortunately, there is a very positive side to this. It is the invitation for all of us to ask the question, “What good can I do?” at the beginning of each day and as we go through our daily lives.
You may not think of yourself as a particularly influential person; your life may seem quite ordinary in comparison to other people. Yet the reality is that you will probably come into contact with any number of people today, either by chance encounter or by planned meetings. It is said that every contact leaves a trace; what trace do you want to leave with the contacts you make today?
It begins by believing that this applies to us. Today you can help to make a difference to someone’s hour, day or even their life.
