“Do you think I cannot call on my Father” Matthew 26.53
In the garden of Gethsemane, as the mob arrived to arrest Jesus one of his friends stepped forward to protect him with a sword, but Jesus responded with these words: “Do you think I cannot call on my Father…”? These words convey his love for us so powerfully. What he was saying was along the lines of, “I could get out of this if I wanted to, but I choose not to”.
Jesus chose the cross for us because he knew something that no-one else could see, that what he was going to do would have life changing consequences for all humanity and that there was no other way this could happen.
It is all too easy to doubt God’s love, especially when things are hard and we focus on our feelings. This truth brings us back to the certainty that we are loved. Jesus saw all humanity when he was in that garden, and out of his love he made the choice to go through with it. At any point he could have called upon heaven to rescue him, but he chose to go through with his suffering because of what he knew it would achieve. In this way, the door between God and man was opened.
Tomorrow marks the beginning of Holy Week, a time when we will be focussing on the events that make up the Easter story. Now, and in the days ahead as the narrative unfolds, why not resolve to spend a little time each day thanking Jesus for what he endured so that you might enjoy this open door to God. What difference will it make to your life?
