‘…who put their hope in his unfailing love.’ Psalm 147.11
The Living Bible translates this verse beautifully, speaking of those ‘who expect him to be loving and kind’. It’s about us having a wonderful assurance that God’s love is constant and personal, not taking it for granted but trusting it will be there for us whenever we need it.
To expect God’s kindness and put our hope in his unfailing love is a wonderful way to approach him, either for ourselves or on others’ behalf. Sadly, the way we sometimes come to him is with a niggling doubt that he won’t hear us, or with a sense that our actions have caused such a gulf between him and us that it is unlikely he will be favourably disposed to us.
To expect his kindness is actually a very bold attitude. It is to take seriously the verse from Lamentations that ‘his compassions never fail. They are new every morning’ (Lamentations 3.22–23). Whatever the past may have held for you, you can step into this day and the next day expecting his kindness. Whatever you feel you may have done wrong, you need not fear God’s bruising hand or punishment but instead the goodness and welcome of the one who longs for you to call him ‘Abba, Father.’
