Exploring the nature of God – as a mother

‘But I have calmed and quietened myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.’ Psalm 131.2

We are pondering some of the verses in the Bible that speak of the ‘motherly’ qualities of God. Today’s verse provides us with a very visual picture of the security we can find in God’s protection. The Message translation words it like this: ‘Like a baby content in its mother’s arms…’

This beautiful picture is of a protective and caring mother who is attentive to every movement and sound coming from her child. It is also a lovely picture of God’s care for us, which he revealed to the psalmist. I suspect that an image of a child in its father’s arms would not fully reveal the depth of God’s love for us in quite the same way as in a mother’s arms.

This is an image that invites us to make it our own; to see ourselves in that picture of a baby resting in its mother’s arms. Put yourself there – how does it feel, and what does it say to you about how God sees you and the joy you bring to him?

A healing touch from Jesus can be life changing – which is wonderful! – but if you, or the people you are praying for, are inclined to make any significant change to your lifestyle, please think it through carefully and check it out with a wise friend, doctor or church leader first.
